In 1948 my Mom began sewing dance recital costumes for two dance schools in our home town. Yards and yards of wonderfully, sparkly, shiny fabric would arrive along with sequins and beads and feathers. It was always a great day to see those supplies arrive.
I had a baby doll at the time and was allowed to use the scraps to fashion clothes for my doll. She had the brightest, flashiest diaper covers and shirts you ever saw. I knew how to use a needle and I continued to expand her wardrobe. Thus began a love for sewing and fabric.
When I outgrew playing with dolls and sewing for them, I went into sewing for myself. I was the student the home ec teacher dreaded to see. Everyone else was content to hem a dish towel and make an apron. I was on to pajamas, a skirt and a blouse. Sewing for others helped pay part of my college tuition bills.
Along came a daughter and out came the doll clothes patterns. She had a Fisher Price "My Friend Mandy" doll. It was sort of an earlier version of the now popular 18" girl doll. So that doll's wardrobe became immense.
Some years ago I realized how easy it was to sew for the dolls. They didn't change sizes like I had. Patterns didn't need lots of alterations (like mine do) and whatever I made, she was happy with. So although I still sew for myself at times and I do sew other things, I design and sew for the dolls that every girl seems to own. Most of my outfits are one of a kind, but I do do some repeats.
